Offenbach’s operetta is a satirical retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and his journey to the underworld to save his beloved, Eurydice. In this version, Orpheus and Eurydice are unhappily married, and he reluctantly travels to the underworld in an attempt to retrieve his estranged wife from her new lover, Pluto. The comical opera features beloved music, including a popular can-can.
