CCM Opera d'arte presents
Composed by Claudio Monteverdi
Libretto by Alessandro Striggio
Brett Scott, conductor
Amy Johnson, director and co-producer
Kenneth Shaw, co-producer
This opera, premiered in 1607, bridges the musical divide between the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras. It is the oldest opera that is still regularly performed to this day. Opera d’arte’s telling of the Ancient Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice is hardly a stodgy relic from the Renaissance, though. This production instead celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, placing the action squarely in the 1969 aesthetic of the Age of Aquarius and that pivotal moment in history.
What better modern setting could there be than that colorful, hopeful time when flower power, free love and peace were the goals, and the search for heightened consciousness was thought to be the panacea to heal a broken world? These are the very themes explored in Opera d’arte’s L’Orfeo!
